As a member of the McGee Elementary community you have agreed to uphold the McGee pledge: "As a member of McGee Elementary, I commit to uphold our values of respect, integrity, and curiosity. I pledge to support my classmates, respect my teachers, and engage enthusiastically in my education."
I expect you to:
Arrive curious.
Stay engaged.
Follow our procedures.
Be enthusiastic about our work.
This is your education and you should expect the highest standards from your teachers. As such, you can expect that I will:
Honor your heritage and beliefs.
See you for the unique individual you are.
Treat you with the respect you deserve.
Value your presence in the classroom every day.
Work hard to ensure you have the skills to achieve your dreams.
You should expect the following from your classroom family and treat them the same:
Kindness (Keeping hands, feet and hurtful words to ourselves.)
Respect (We are all different, but should be treated the same.)
Curiosity (Ask your classroom family what they're working on. Show them you're interested in their work.)
Support (Turn to each other for help and friendship. You will be spending a lot of time together this year, and sometimes things get bumpy.)
Help (Your classroom family have great ideas and answers to big problems. Ask them for help!)
When I'm talking you're voice is off.
Follow directions.
Use quiet voices.
Use walking feet.
(If you ever forget, look at the posters - one is near my desk, and the other is on the whiteboard!)
When the rules get broken or the expectations aren't being upheld, you should expect that I will:
Redirect you to the proper way of doing things.
Talk to you one on one about what went wrong and what I expect from you.
Ask why the rule is continuing to be broken. (This helps me to help you!)
Escalate as needed (This is a fancy way of saying get your grownup or the principal involved).
I reward my class with curriculum aligned "Fun Fridays" for adhering to our classroom expectations and rules. Examples of "Fun Friday" activities are:
Instant Photography Exploration
Activity: Students take instant photographs around the school or classroom, focusing on a particular theme like "nature" or "friendship." They then create a photo essay or a display board.
Dot Art Inspired by Yayoi Kusama
Activity: Students create their own dot art pieces using various materials like paint, markers, or stickers. They can also create a collaborative mural.
Writing Postcards to Foreign Country Classrooms
Activity: Students learn about a foreign country and write postcards to students in that country. They can also create their own postcards with drawings representing cultural aspects of the country.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Activity: Organize a scavenger hunt where students search for specific natural items (leaves, rocks, etc.) and then classify them in different categories.
Origami and Geometry
Activity: Teach students how to fold simple origami shapes and relate them to geometric concepts like symmetry and shapes.
Classroom Garden Project
Activity: Create a small classroom garden where students can plant seeds, water plants, and observe their growth. They can document the process in a journal.
Interactive Storytelling with Puppets
Activity: Students create their own puppets and use them to tell stories or act out scenes from books they are reading.
STEM Challenges with Recycled Materials
Activity: Organize STEM challenges where students use recycled materials to build structures, solve problems, or create inventions.
