If you'd prefer to help outside of the classroom you can do so in a number of ways. Here are some small ideas with big impact:

1. Read with your student. The library is sending books home weekly and this is a great way to support your student. Reading Rockets provides great insights about working with your first grader on reading. 

2. Talk to your student about what they're working on in class. Scholastic provides a great list of questions that go beyond, "How was your day?"

3. McGee Elementary school is proud to offer every student free breakfast. Encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity by stopping into the cafeteria. (It's hard to focus when you're hungry and kids are ALWAYS hungry!)
